Reality Check

So far in the novel, we see Gatsby's undying love for Daisy. The guy gets a mansion across from hers and throws lavish parties practically every week just to get an ounce of her attention. And the second he got her attention, he threw his expensive shirts in her face,  saying "Look at me now, I'm just as rich as your husband but you actually like me". Gatsby shows off his wealth in an attempt to attract Daisy to woo her (he is surprisingly successful). He does this because knows Daisy comes from a wealthy background, and will not settle for less even if it means ditching her "love" for some rich guy. In other words, she is a golddigger. From Gatsby's actions, we see that he is also delusional, and stubborn. No matter how bad things get, Gatsby will go to great lengths to make his fantasy with Daisy become a reality. But, Gatsby needs to wake up. Let's face it, if Daisy can ditch her "love" (Gatsby) for an ignorant rich man (Tom) once, she can do it again, but this time, for her "comfortable" and secure life with Tom. It's foreshadowed in the novel when Tom argues "She's not leaving me! Certainly not for a common swindler who'd have to steal the ring he put on her finger" showcasing how being with Gatsby doesn't come with the certainty it would with Tom. Gatsby needs to understand that no matter how badly he wants her, she is too far gone to be his.

  1. This is so real I can't keep watching this "romance" play out. Daisy's love is conditional and Gatsby needs to develop some self respect and RUN. He's rich now he'll have an easy time finding someone he can love. I'm confused on why he's obsessed with Daisy he can be better.

  2. It’s interesting since Daisy herself comes from such an affluent family (so we know she has money) yet still will only marry based on class. I agree that Gatsby should’ve since in the end she led to his ultimate demise.

  3. I really like how real and like modern this is. your post really speaks to the Gen-Z perspective of things. Daisy really is so impressionable and gatsbys beeing a little obsesive and creepy.
