The duality of Satire

Satire and humor can be used to condition people out of both good and bad qualities. The line lies in the intent of the person using it. The device has the power to provoke thought and empathy. They can act as mirrors for reflection --- used to call out an undesired quality requiring them to reassess their perspectives and take action toward positive change. For example, talk show hosts like Trevor Noah use humor to address pressing social conflict issues. This use of humor promotes awareness in an engaging way. In mocking the situation, they call for a change. In addition to this, memes, and viral videos that mock relevant events on social media platforms spread awareness, and encourage activism.

However, it is important to note that satire can also be used to shave away respectable qualities in a person. When used irresponsibly, it reinforces toxic social norms such as the perception that vulnerability is a sign of weakness- especially in men. For example, instead of receiving empathy and help from peers after getting hurt, one may encounter them saying things like "Oh are you gonna go run to your mommy now"  or "Man up". This is one example of how humor can be used negatively. In the future, he or she may end up internalizing their feelings and assume that it is unacceptable to show vulnerability, even in moments of pain and distress. This bottling up of feelings can lead to bigger issues in the future, undermining the individual's emotional well-being.

While satire and humor have the potential to inspire positive change, the fact of the matter is that the impact lies in the intent behind its use. It is a double-sided sword that can provoke empathy but also shave away desirable qualities in people.

I like how you defined satire and humor, and showed the differences between the positives aspect of it and the negative aspects of it. I like that you mentioned how negative humor can influence someone’s livelihood and how they may internalize their feelings.

  2. I liked how you offered the multiple ways satire could be used. I also liked how you added examples like “man up”. It really shows the demeaning tone in it!
