A true Conservationist

For this week's blog, we were told to choose from 4 blog prompts and write a passage on it. I chose to write on prompt 8, quote 3.

According to John James Audubon, "a true conservationalist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers but is borrowed from his children". I think this statement is pretty reasonable for a variety of reasons, one of them being the fact that someone who calls themselves a "conservationalist" must possess qualites such as selflessness and must advocate for the protection and preservation of the enviornment despite the challenges or inconveniences they may encounter while doing so. A true conservationalist understands that the enviornment will outlive them, but continues to treat it with care and respect. They show no recklessness despite knowing that the worsening enviornment is not as big of a problem for them as it will be for the future generations. It circles back to what Audubon was saying when he mentioned that the world is 'borrowed from his children' signifying that we must hold it and cherish it so the coming generations can enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like a starry night sky instead of seeing one that is lifeless. It would be a pity for a young kid to think of the famous painting "the starry night" by Vincent Van Gough as fictionnal because of our poor decisions, in name of "YOLOing" through life. Conservationalists understand that overexploitation of the enviornment today can have long-lasting consequences tomorrow; they may even be irreversable if there are a lack of these true conservationalists.

  1. I like how you interpreted the quote because I have the same thoughts as you. What happens to the environment isn’t as much of a problem as it is for the adults than it is for the younger future generations. However, we should all still work together to combat all the negative things that are harming the environment instead of continuing in our destructive habits.

  2. I liked how you analyzed how we should "borrow" the earth rather than given. The way you spoke about taking care of our planet for the next few generations really supported your claim and added to your piece.

  3. I like how you begin with a quote. It really sets the tone for the entire essay!

  4. I was talking about this with my mom the other day and she asked me where I would like to live when I get older, but the only thing I could think to say is, "I'd be lucky to be able to live with a roof over my head," because of the systems put in place by the older people in power. Not to mention the fact that now our generations have to be more proactive than ever to have a future worth living in.
